Aero surging/jerkiness revisited + backfiring

I've been posting every once in a while on this topic for the past two years or so but haven't come to any solution that works as yet. But I came across something on this board while searching for something else that could possibly be the cause. So here goes...
'95 9000 Aero 5-speed, 92k
The car has been getting increasingly 'jerky' since I bought it. The engine jerks the car back and forth when getting on and off the throttle unless I do it VERY slowly. It also surges (sometimes violently) in first gear below about 1700rpm at light or no throttle, making it very difficult to drive slowly through parking lots and such. Idle also wanders a fair amount.
Attempts to fix include:
New spark plugs several times, different gaps tested
Fuel system cleaner
Throttle body cleaning
New DI
All new vacuum hoses
New bypass valve
New motor mounts (all except trans.)
It more recently started backfiring lightly when getting off the gas during gear shifts, which may or may not be related. In looking at posts on backfiring, someone thought that a faulty throttle position sensor might cause backfiring by not shutting off the injectors completely at zero throttle. Or something else (injectors, FPR) might somehow be leaking fuel into one or more cylinders when it's not supposed to be. I have TCS, so it wouldn't be as simple as a throttle position sensor, but that's a start.
What I'm asking here is could one of these problems be to blame for my surging and jerkiness? Any other suggestions or courses of action?
