Yo-
I just put in a clarion head unit. My car (a 1991 CD) came with all the options- a tape deck/radio, EQ, and a CD player. The CD player was the problem, as it skipped like crazy (NYC has ROUGH streets). The new clarion unit was free, but only a year old, and not too offensive visually, and will serve as a temporary solution.
I've been looking for a while, and pondering on how to go with this. I really liked the early '90's styling of the 3 full din slots with lots of buttons/leds/switches, and my biggest problem with all of the new radios is their fancy big pimpin' displays. I'm leaning towards alpine, but haven't picked a model (MP3 definitely, and line in definitely, so I can hook up my laptop directly).
But what to do with these empty DIN slots? Taurus cupholder? They're so ugly. Boost guage? How about remoting control of the dawes boost controller to the dash? Wouldn't that be cool? Another storage bin? Ashtray? Too many options! I want to preserve the euro-look, but I might go more Frank Lloyd Wright with a little wood and steel. Sure.
Actually hooking up the radio took about 30 minutes. I cut off the saab radios connectors and crimped them onto the new radio's leads, and plugged it in. It was damn easy. And it sounds better, way better. Much more presence, and a fuller bottom end, even with the stock speakers.
And here's my biggest problem with the whole stereo setup: lack of a full soundstage in the drivers seat. Because the speakers are all mounted so high, it sounds like the band is playing above me. I really want to get some speakers down low, either in the doors or built in to the cavity behind the center console (which someone on this site recommended).
So there you go.
I can't figure it out either!
I'm keeping all of the original equipment for now, just in case I decide to get the CD player rebuilt, and go that way. We'll see!
