your conclusions. I have a '95 Aero 5-speed and my wife has a '03 9-5 Aero auto. Going fast is only part of the equation. The 9-5 handles the road far better than any unmodified 9000; not to mention the latest 9-5 has a more rigid chassis and is just an all around better car than the 9000.
The paddle shifter of the 9-5 or 9-3 isn't meant to replace a manual box. The M3 "auto" has a real clutch and isn't really an auto box in the convention sense.
The 9-5 from '02 on has an even better auto box, if you want to go fast in an auto 9-5 Aero, just push that "S" button on top of the shifter and it puts any unmodified 9000 Aero (5-sp or otherwise) to shame.
I think you may need to recalibrate your '97 Aero's speedo first before making your conclusion about the 9-5 Aero being slower.
