Counter-intuitive rear tire wear; 2 questions Posted by DickT [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I posted last week about a rear alignment problem on my 89s hatchback with 209k miles. Zeke and Andrew responded with advice on replacing the rear axle/suspension. After getting a price from the junkyard ($250 axle only, $325 with control arms, shocks, sway bar) I decided to check what I have to see if I can find exactly where the problem is. My last alignment showed (in degrees, according to the printout) -0.6 left and -0.5 right camber (acceptable range 0.0 to -0.5). I put a straight edge on the axle and there is a smooth sweep, low point in the middle. That explained the slight negative camber and didn't seem to indicate jacking damage. Total toe was 0.41 (range 0.14 to 0.56), but it showed 0.36 left , 0.04 right, and a thrust angle of .16. I measured the wheel base along the rims and sure enough the right side was about one quarter inch longer than the left. This seemed to confirm that the rear axle was toed in on the left since front caster was spot on both wheels.
My two questions are: 1. Although there is a slight sag side to side in the axle resulting in slightly too much negative camber, total toe is within spec and the axle may be OK. Is there adjustment in the control arm mounting bolts or is there something else I should look for to account for its being out of square with the body? 2.(Most puzzling) Why is the worst tire wear on the outside of the right rear tire? I don't take that many hard left turns. One last bit of info, my sway bar seems bent. but the bushings are so shot it shouldn't matter.
Thanks to all.
