turbo whine louder than usual

I've had my 86 9kT for over a year now, and I never really heard that cool turbo whine when accelerating. Sometimes I would hear the hooting on the freeway on-ramps. But in the past couple of months I've noticed the turbo whine is louder. It is a little bit louder in the mornings for some reason. But I can really hear it when city driving.
Also, it seemed to accompany a louder exhaust sound near the engine area, around the turbo manifold or header pipe area, almost like there was a hole or leak somewhere. No smoke coming out or burning anything weird.
So, is my turbo going to be toast, or is that just normal? The prev. owner said he replaced the turbo just before I bought it, and it does look like it had been replaced.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan
