Some cars came from the factory with 80 amp alternators. I believe that it depended on the options the car came with, but I've got no firm data to back that up. I'm pretty sure the 'stock' alternator is 80 amps.
I know my '88 9000Ts both came with 80 amp alternators, and that 80 is the 'stock replacement'. When I put in a new alternator, I spent a few extra bucks and got a 115 amp unit, and have been very happy with it. Voltage droop at idle under load (headlights, defroster, brake lights on) is minimal as compared to the 80 amp unit.
