the blue and red cap thing.
I remember some Saabs have a small red cap on the high pressure line even with the system filled with R12.

But I haven't seen a blue cap on the lowpressure line with R12 system (they are usually black or silver/grey).

So the chances are pretty good that your system contains R 134, especially if the fill plugs are aluminum with a diameter of approx 3/4" and no outside threads.
The R12 nipples are around 1/4" and have visible threads on the outside of nipple.

No, it's no easy way to surely say that the system contains R12, R134 or some other exotic blend, even for a professional.

That's why California (and some other States) have a new law since last year that all shops dealing with A/C recovery/recharge have to have a refrigerant indentifier device (another $1000-2000 purchase).

It's pretty much a hand held machine that determines what type of freon the system holds and if any flammable gasses are present.
Yes, propane is a fairly good cooling media and some underground auto shops fill the A/C system up with that and puts the next mechanic/driver and emergency personal in danger if the system would leak and cause an explosion.

As for the bubbles in the sight glass. Only when the system is filled to max will there be no bubbles. As soon as the level of refrigerant drops (even a few oz), the bubbles gets visible.

The system in your car contains approx 2lbs of freon, at 1lbs, the system still performs really good at normal temperatures. Only when you get up to 90-100 degrees and above will you notice a slight drop in performance with that amount of freon.

The low pressure switch will cut out the A/C compressor at around 5-8oz of freon and that's when the customer usually brings the car in and say that the A/C system just quit over night, when infact the system have been slowly leaking for the last year or more.
