Black, would indicate a ground wire. From what I recall on my 94, a similarly thick wire is the radio interference ground wire. That connects from the upper mount bracket to the engine block (close to the injectors).
That being said, mine does not have brass connectors.
Anyway, it's just a guess (I don't have my 88 anymore).
