Canister Purge Valve.

Howdy Dudes,
The purge valve on the charcoal canister seems to be open at all times
and is leaking into the intake creating a rough idle, etc. Well to be more specific, the plug that goes into the purge valve is rusted beyond recognition and therefore reduced to nothing. Some rust has also found its way into the purge valve connector.
I have plugged the vaccum nipple at the intake which lowered my idle a notch. Now, is it safe to drive it like that. should I also unplug the purge valve anyway ?
