The recirc motor - gear reduction output shaft fits into the flap a couple of inches. Not much chance of moving the flap with the motor in place without breaking the flap. The motor isn't too hard to get out except for the rear screw, a lot of patience and a little ingeuity will get it out.
Check the motor contineuity at the connector. If it is open circuit or shorted you might try rapping on the motor and see if you get the correct resistance of something like 50 to 100 Ohms. If you have some resistance the motor can be run by connecting power to it via the connector. I used a battery charger set to 6 volts to limit the stall current. Mine had debri shorting a couple commutator segments, it worked ok when the debri was removed.
