they are two different cars. To many non-Saab owners, the 9-5 is just like any good European family sedan. It is more sedan like than sports car like. Hmm, hmm, for lack of a better word, it is less Saab like. I won't comment on its look as that differs with people.
The 9-5 is a much more comfortable car to drive around FAST, it is smoother, quieter, and goes over bumps without rattling everything not tied down. Many here of course know the 9000 (Aero or otherwise) so I don't need to elaborate. There is very little similarity between the 9-5 and 9000 other than the name plate and maybe the engine origin. So if you expect a better 9000 then you would be disappointed. However, if you want a good sporty and comfortable sedan/wagon, then you won't find a better one than the 9-5 Aero near this price. The Audi costs a few thousands more and the wagon is still a dog, not to mention mechanical and electrical problems galore.
My (actually wife's) 9-5 Aero is an auto (wife doesn't shift) and it can be launched off the line quicker than my 5-sp 9K Aero. In Sport mode, it zips up to speed smoother than I can shift my car.
Both cars can go over 100+ in a heart beat, the 9-5 is more comfortable and at ease at that speed. The 9K Aero needs more attention at that speed due to its harder suspension and more wind and road noise.
The 9000 has more interior room and storage space. Storage bins are essentially useless in the 9-5 due to their small sizes. I found this out when I tried to transfer what was in my wife's then 9000 to the 9-5. I ended up with small piles of maps/booklets I couldn't put anywhere in the new car.
The 9-5 Aero seats are good but different from the 9K Aero seats. The 9-5 Aero seats fit tight, it holds me in place and I can't even wiggle. The 9K Aero seats are more generous in dimension. Both seats have excellent support.
I think you are correct in saying that the 9-5 interior doesn't look as nice as the later 9K. The materials used in the 9-5 cabin are not as good as the 9K, this includes the carpet, leather, and headliner and even the switches. You need to make your decision about the metallic dash. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but it does grow on you and it looks better with a black interior.
The 9-5 is a bit more generic, both in look and character, so it is NOT a 9000 in any form. I think the 2002/2003 Aero would be a very good car to have at lease turn in time :-). I don't mind having one to replace my 9K Aero.
