I purchased my mint-condition '98 two years ago with 42K miles on it. On the drive home, the tranny would bang into 2nd. Had to bring it back and had a rebuilt tranny installed (under used-car warranty).
Over the course of the next 3 months, this tranny would gush fluid all over my garage floor, caused by a faulty seal around the hole where the shift-linkage goes into the case. Had my local dealer install another rebuilt tranny (under Saab 50K-mile warranty), after many tries of having them try to solve the problem.
Now, I've just put 15K miles on this tranny, and have not had a single problem (knock-on-wood). And I have definitely put this one to the test since I've upgraded my ECU to a Stage 3 giving the car much more hp and torque (higher than a stock Aero), and proved it out beating many a sports car on the highway.
My tranny is fairly new, but I thought I'd give you my experiences with the previous trannies. Then again, there's been far more posts about problems with sticks than autos.
If you know the history of the car, and the car has been cared for (a/t fluid changes, especially), you should be okay.
