I just read the rest of your question. The position sensor can tell the computer that pistons 1 and 4 are at the top of their strokes, but can't tell which one because the crank rotates twice to complete the firing order. That's where the ionization comes it. The cylinder under compression will have a lower resistance, and that is how it figures out when cylinder 1 is at TDC.
I seem to recall that when the engine is cranking and below a certain speed, the DI blasts all 4 cylinders at the same time to get things started. This is what allows the DI cassette to be checked when it is off the head, provided that all of the spark plugs are grounded.
