I got my results back and opened them like I got got my GREs! The car is a 93 BMW 325is w/191k miles. I realize that this is the wrong board for this kind of thing, but as one who enjoys this board so very much more than any of the BMW boards, I think I am making a net contribution.

The oil was Mobil 1 5-30 used mostly on urban trips in a very cold Minneapolis winter. The change interval was 4,930 miles. The filter was by Mann.

Here's a breakdown; on the left is the result from my sample, on the right is the limit for "normal" wear. All numbers are PPM.

Copper: 2/40
Iron: 15/100
Chromium 0/40
Aluminum 2/40
Lead 2/100
Lookin' good!

Here's a breakdown of the additives:

Molybdenum: 86
Phosphourus: 1491
Zinc: 1246
Magnesium: 198
Calcium: 3642
I don't know what good ranges are for this stuff. Dick in Falls Church?

There were no contaminants such as antifreeze or silicon.

The oil properties:

Viscosity: 30 at 100 Deg C (right what it should be)

There was one more section for % measures allowable that I don't quite get:
Sulfur: 99 (where does this come from? oxidized fuel?)
Oxidation: 0
Nitration: 13

The sulfur seems high but is within normal levels.

This seems to indicate that 5000 oil-change intervals are jsut fine w/synthetic oils. I don't see a problem with going even farther.

I'd imagine this information is quite relavant to Saab engines. Comments?
