I did this a few years ago on my 86. At the time it seemed easier to not remove the cluster. Pull the top of the dash off. If it's only the backlighting they are all a common bulb and simply twist in and out.
You might as well replace everything while you have it apart. Some of the warning bulbs are larger. If you choose to leave the cluster in place you have to be somewhat of a contortionist to reach a few on the bottom. A handy size mirror helps because of the limited clear between the windshield and the dash. I can't remember exactly, but I think the pictogram pops out easily so you can get access.
Call a competent shop and have them send you all the bulbs and a few spares because you will drop at least one into an inaccessable void. I ordered mine from Scanwest Autosport in Seattle. 888-90TURBO.
This is not a fun job, especially on a hot sunny day, but seeing the instruments all lit up again has a certain therapeutic satisfaction!
Good luck, Doug 86 9000T 159k
