A few suggestions.

Look at the hatch release handle from the outside. The handle will sometimes break on the left edge so that the latch doesn't work. This happened to me 2 weeks ago, and I was able to get a replacement off a wrecked 9000 (Thanks Nathan!).

Have someone opperate the central locking system while you listen for the lock motor working in the hatch. If it is quiet then that has to be fixed.

If you can't get the hatch open, you are going to have to climb into the trunk and remove the interior cover. There are 6 of those plastic fasteners across the top. Give them a quarter turn with a screwdriver and pull them out. The remaining fasteners are the white plastic push pins like you find on the doors. Yank on the interior cover and pull it free.

There is a rod that runs from the handle down to the latch. I could have worked free from the handle because it is a ball in socket type joint. There is a similar arrangement for the connection from the lock cylinder to the latch.
