Been there,,, But due to lack of time and place I had to have the shop do the work - I cannot comment how loose the rivets were. The noise started quite suddenly, so I could assume that one of the rivets got totally snapped.

Mine didn't make any extra noises while cranking. The overall noise forced me to have the repair...

You might have just loose rivets, but they might give up sometime, then if the rim gets a bit sideways you might loose some more expensive parts too...

Sorry, I don't know about the year when the welding was added,,, The shop told me that "older were without the welding..."

Of course you can also have something else making the noise,,, just the description and exact location gave me the idea,,,
