I had the same "creaking" on a '95 CSE I once owned, and it turned out to be a loose sub-frame, which is bolted to the forward part of the car. I was in California at the time and B&B Saab found the problem. In my case the threads of the sub-frame were stripped, and the cost was going to be quite high to actually get at the threads to repair them, so as a cheap alternative they used a heli-coil for the repair and that held as long as I owned the car.
In your case, if it is the sub-frame, you might be able to just tighten the bolts to solve the problem.
Also, I've seen other people post on this board with a similar problem and the the problem was the lower control arm bushings.
In order of mechanical expertise on this board, I'm more at the bottom of the pile, so maybe someone else will give you a better idea.
I don't know if you've gone long distance in you Saab yet, but they are wonderful cars for that sort of trip. I drive between Illinois and central California about 4 times/yr, and I prefer the 3 day drive to 1 day on the airlines' aluminum sewer pipe.
