I have an '89 CDT with 160,000 miles, manual transmission, no DI. I have had it since 140K. The car has had quite a few problems since I have owned it. Some of the most expensive were: clutch and slave cylinder replacement, headgasket and radiator. Right now the car needs some major suspension work (load-leveling shocks failed in rear), and some motor mounts, and a half dozen other things both minor and semi-major. The car was checked out when I got it and it came from AZ so no rust ( I'm in MA).
That Being Said, I have a very strong attachment to the car for pure driving pleasure on the highway, safety and comfort, etc. They can be very nice very smooth cars. I think my car is worth about $800-1200 dollars in its current condition, yet I would never sell it for that. And slowly I am learning to fix things myself a little, so that's good. I think it boils down to your tolerance for "issues" in your car, if you can't tolerate things cropping up and requiring attention in that part of your life, then you probably don't want a 15 year old SAAB. Any car of this age has parts on it which are on their way out, and you have to assume the worst about a part if you don't know it's history. Repair history is very important info to know, unfortunately I didn't realize that whan I got this car.
The other thing I would think about is that if you are going the old-SAAB path anyway, you may want to attempt to get a 2.3 liter car with DI. Quite a bit more expensive and not available until '91 model year but if you are interested in performance these cars are much faster,
Good Luck whatever you do and don't underestimate the repair costs if you can't DIY, if you can DIY there is no better car to own largely because of SAABNET and all the helpful people here. (Got my AC working today because of this board, and even though it's a hack it came just in time and cost me $1.99.) Thanks -AMG
