My Aero has had an Abbott ECU for the last 70K miles.
It has 130K on the drive-line (including auto trans)
The Abbott ECU allows the motor to make 220 HP and
260 ft-lbs of torque at the drive wheels. I estimate
the motor is putting out about 250 HP at the crank.
I also have a K&N, a 2.5 in. Sabre exhaust.
I do not abuse the transmission, no full-throttle
upshifts or down-shifts. I downshift the transmission
manually prior to large throttle openings.
I try to "ease" the throttle to slow the rate of change of
torque. Shock loads are not real good for an autobox.
Maybe I have one of those 3-sigma transmissions.
I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. I switched over by doing
4 consecutive changes. I drain & refill the ATF every 10K.
The transmission has had synthetic in it since 40K.
I obviously have no regrets. The combination of an
auto transmission with a
torque converter that lets the motor jump right up
to 3000 rpm and a turbo that produces 18 lbs of boost
results in some pretty impressive acceleration.
If I were to do it again, I would use one of the Swedish
tuner's ECUs. Their approach to producing power seems
to be much safer for the motor in all conditions.
Abbott uses a higher pressure wastegate acuator
(along with new software) that
essentially raises the base boost to 10-11 psi. I feel that
this system is vulnerable to things like bad fuel.
I did my ECU mod 3 or 4 years ago. It seemed at that time
Abbott was the only known option. I know more now.
