I tend to agree with the above post about the dangers of charging with inadequate tools and knowledge. I have been blasted on this board for saying that before, but I have also been blasted in the face with refrigerant.
You don't have the right tools to do what you want. You need a real gauge set which has fittings for the high side, low side and charge can. The first time I tried charging, I used an interdynamics charge device and ended up breaking the high side schrader valve and loosing all the refrigerant is a tornado like plume. There were basically no directions included with that device and I am lucky I was standing on the other side of the compressor when the valve broke because I could have gotten a serious burn. You also needed to read a book devoted to ac. There's a Haynes manual available on that subject.
There's a good chance that if you proceed, you will cost yourself a lot more than the $250 the pro wants to do it. That figure also seems very high to me. Was that in US dollars? I would think a charge should be less than half that amount.
