Road Trip Story & Alternator Info

Just got back from a 3300 mile road trip in my 9000. To make a long story short, the car performed well, except for failed alternator bearings which were resolved rather painlessly.
As I rolled into San Francisco after 1000 miles of driving, I opened the windows and heard a noisy grinding, almost like popcorn popping but more metallic. It was RPM dependant and coming from the alternator area. In my friends driveway we pulled the serpentine belt and found that the alternator shaft was wobbly and loose. Oddly, the voltage was still strong. This was on a Saturday - no Saab shops open. After calling around for a while to the local parts stores, I found a place called ASC about 25 miles south of Berkeley that does rebuilds. In 2 hours they re-built by own alternator, got it back looking brand new. It took less that 30 minutes to put back in, and has worked flawlessly ever since.
Other than that, it was running kind of hot in Southern California traffic and 100+ Nevada heat, but did fine when the temps went back down. I'll backflush the cooling system and see if it helps the traffic part.
