My experience is that all of the metal and plastic bits end up in the sump. The screen in the oil pick up tube has a very fine mesh and it keeps anything large from being ingested into the oil pump. After looking at the pickup tube, I can see that any kind of sludge build up could cause oil starvation in the engine at high speeds, and there are posts of engines on 9-3's and 9-5's failing due to people treating them appliances.
Inspect the oil pump for wear in the gears, but since you are probably going to get a used timing cover, inspect the pump in the used cover instead.
Pull the sump and clean it out and I don't think you will have anything to worry about.
