Squealing compressor on AC sometimes

I have a 1990 9000 Turbo. When I start the car the compressor squeals loudly for about 10 or so seconds but the AC blows cold. Is there a low and high setting for the compressor? Sometimes this squeal happens only every 10 to 15 minutes. It seems the colder the temp of the engine the more the squeal. I am not sure if this is related but my car seems to run hotter than normal for 75 degree farenheit weather about 3/4 high on the gage before the cooling fan kicks in.
