Well, the followers are all the same (all 16, so intake and exhaust are definately the same).

The play in the intake followers sounds normal, but I see no reasons for which the exhaust followers shouldn't have the same play as the others. Even a huge wear in the exaust valve seats couldn't take all the play in the followers, if the engine had not big problems (continued misfiring, runnind way too lean or rich, badly overheated...).

So, I'd try to take out the followers and try to move them, grabbing the inner part with a magnet, and moving it in and out. If you can see differences between ex. and in. in the inner part travel, then have tem cleaned (a engine shop cleaned mine all for 30 euros) or change them.

Clean them all of course, I did it and even the ones that looked good, after the job had much ore play, and in the rest pos were much shorter (so the all valves closed right). A cleaned followers hase a travel of almost 5 mm, if I remember correctly.

You could ask: yes it sounds good, but why just the exhaust followers?
Answer: I don't know. Could be they are a lower in the head, so they are more prone to catch dirt in the oil.
