These guys don't seem competent. It is good that the firewall has been repaired. The thing the mechanics may have missed is the alignment of the clutch master cylinder. I'll bet $10 that if you pulled out the master cylinder you'd see that one side of the shaft attached to the piston would be slightly worn. A good mechanic would be able to shim the master cylinder just a little bit so that the piston and chamber are co-linear. Right now I'm guessing that the piston is just a little crooked which would account for the funny feeling half-way through clutch pedal travel.
I have a spare (new) master cylinder for a pre '90 (installed in a '87) that I used for 100 miles last summer. If you want it, send me an email.
