If you get a single pop when you turn the steering wheel, check to make sure that the bolts holding the steering rack in are properly tight. It isn't a case of the rack about to fall out, but if one of the bolts holding the rack is even a little loose, you'll get a popping noise as the rack shifts a little. In my case, just tightening up the two bolts did the trick.
Other places to look would be tie rod ends, A-arm bushings, steering knuckle.
A popping noise isn't normal. If it's easily repeatable, a decent shop should be able to trace it down to the noisy part. "It makes noise, but I can't find it" doesn't sound like a good answer to me.
