Discovered front axel nuts were loose ...

I've been trying to diagnose a front end "clunk" I've been hearing the past few months on my '88 9KT (5 spd) and Today I discovered it was the front axel nuts. Both of them took about a half turn a least to tighten to the correct torque value (220 ft-lbs.) Prior to tightening, there was probably a good 1/32" of side to side play as I pulled the hub in and out. Not Good! So I'm wondering, is it common for the nuts to loosen that much? I replaced the clutch a few months ago. Could this have anything to do with it? Also, is loctite (threadlocker) typically used on these? Much thanks,
Bruce
