At end of day, the fact that you were unharmed is the best thing !

I was doing about 110kph in median HOV lane on the Trans Canada (heading out to rendevous other Saabers in my Saab club for a run) when all the cars in front slowed down very quickly. This happened in all three lanes. I too decelerated without slamming my brakes, as did the guy in front of me, but then he suddenly swerved into the next lane. Just as I was wondering why he did so, I looked in front of me and saw a truck tire (with axle attached !) wobbling in the middle of the HOV lane and rolling towards me at about 15kph. But as I was still decelerating at about 60-70kph I had but fraction of a second to swerve out of the way. Since the adjacent lane was now clogged up, I was trapped and my only option was to swerve TOWARDS the median concrete barrier and hopefully squeeze through the space between the tire/axle assembly and the barrier. I managed to get 3/4 car length past the wheel but the end of the axle still made contact to the rear passenger door. I pulled over on the shoulder about 40 feet ahead while traffic crawled by, and some nice guy came and rolled the "axle of evil" off the road. Apparently it came off a sawed-off pickup trailer being towed by a GMC 3500 that was now parked on the right shoulder of the highway. I got their plates, assessed the damage to my baby (12"-long gouge just under the moulding strip, paint loss, see primer coat beneath, 1/4" indentation all the way through) and was only relieved that neither myself nor my wife were hurt in this freak incident.

Car should be back from body shop today all happy and shiny. Insurance co. is paying the full repair bill but won't waive my deductible until they confirm with the pickup driver about losing his wheel/axle.
