Hi,
The reason for the play is not a hydrolic failure! As these cars age the pedal and the attaching arm of the Master Cylinder ages also.
If you take the woolly cover out from the underneath the driver's side dash. (Its held there with black molding screws) and move the pedal with your hand you will notice that the pin that goes thru the hole in the pedal and the MC is loose. There is nothing wrong with the pin most of the time, but the both the holes in the MC and the pedal have worn out to a larger diameter.
The solution to this problem is up to you. You can either mickey mouse something that will keep the arm tight in the pedal. Or you can goto the junk yard and get a different pedal (very easy) and get a new MC (never a bad idea, but costs $100) or you can live with it knowing there is nothing wrong with the hydrolics.
