Hi guys,
I have a 88 9000 myself and am sort of your stardard car dweeb. This is somewhat of a tough question. I have a buddy who also owns a '87 9000 turbo (pretty much the same car as mine as far as I know) just overheaded badly in his '87 (probably a thermostat) and now it's on the side of the road. I'm led to believe it's blown a head gasket... I kind of owe him one for an old Jeep he gave me some time ago and would like to help him out on this. I've only replaced one head gasket and it was on a Jeep. I'm a fairly competent mechanic but because my Saab has been so trouble free I haven't really done anything to it other than change the serpentine belt. My only experience with any Eurean cars is my old Volvo 240 Wagon that I replaced the timing belt and other misc accessories (alternator and such) but that is about it. I also have zero Saab manuals though I could probably go out and buy one. His Saab ran really well, in fact better than mine. Just this head gasket thing put a huge dampener on the situation. He just got married and has literally zero dollars and I myself don't really have any extra money right now that I could throw at it. But he also needs to have the car running so this is where the difficulty lies. Should I replace the head gasket myself? Do you think it is something that will be too hard, and are there any "strange" things about one on a '87 9000 turbo?
Also, what about head warpage or cracks? Are they likely on this engine, and what else should I look out for if anything.. Thanks and VERY much appreciated! Otherwise it will probably have a sit a few weeks before it can be taken to a shop unfortunately. All this from a little sh**ty thermostat!
