Hi all,
10 days ago, I set out on a trip from Minneapolis to Yellowstone. It was about 85-90 degrees and the A/C was running pretty much full blast the whole time.
Well, 80 miles down the road, after a brief bathroom stop, the car stalled after going about another mile. I let it cool, started it - it ran fine for about 5 minutes, until it was up to operating temp, then stalled. I went through this cycle several times before calling AAA and getting towed home (we rented a car for the trip - now I'm home). While waiting for the tow, I checked for vacuum leaks (none apparent), then got out my multi-meter and checked the O2 sensor and AMM. Both were within specs.
Now, after letting it sit for 10 days, I cannot get the car to stall. It runs fine but the idle is off - but steady. I ran it for 30+ minutes and let the temp get nice and high, but no stall. There were 'Check Engine' codes when it broke down, but the battery drained over the interim and now they are gone.
I am suspecting the AIC, as it idles high (1200) when the A/C is off and about 800 with it on. If I rev it up and back off, the idle drops way down before stabilizing. The AIC has correct resistance (8 ohms +/-2) and there is 12 volts to the plug. Unplugging the AIC seems to make no noticable differene in the idle and there is no 'Check Engine' light when it's unplugged.
The symptoms are EXACTLY the same as when the grommet for the valve cover breather nipple disintegrated, causing a vacuum leak. That stranded me on another hot day a couple months ago. But that's now fixed.
Is there evidence that the AIC tends to bind in hot weather or get stuck wide open? How can I clean it without breaking it?
I am REALLY hoping it's the AIC and not the ECU...
Thanks in advance,
ETS
