Auto Trans Gremlins! (long)

On Saturday morning I started my car up as normal and was headed for the airport. I had driven about 3 miles when I pulled up to a junction. As I went to pull away, the car didn't want to go very fast at all and the engine revs were getting higher and higher. Once I got to about 15-20mph it changed into 2nd and the car returned to normal. Got to the next junction and the same happened again. The car pulled away very slowly and the revs just got higher and higher.
I decided to pull over and I turned the engine off, then on, went through the grears on the shifter and still there was no real pull in 1st. I couldn't try reverse because of where I was. I decided to keep going. I found that by accelerating harder, wasn't a good thing as the revs got to the redline very quickly and without any noticable speed gain. It was like the feeling you get when a clutch is slipping on a manual.
After a few miles of driving OK in the higher gears, it started to work in 1st again, and then after a few miles more, it didn't. Once I was on the highway, driving constantly in 3rd and 4th for many miles, 1st gear has returned. I have done many short journeys since Saturday morning and 1st hasn't disappeared again.
Any ideas what it could be?
Thanks,
Toby Field (UK)
