Pretty exciting - a good way to get the heart pumping.
As others have said, a common failure mode of the compressor is to sieze. With the compressor essentially stopped, the pulley is still being driven by the belt. The usual result is that the clutch starts slipping, causing a lot of heat, followed by smoke and sometimes flames.
Not running the AC will result in compressors not getting regular lubrication, but that's not always the cause. It happened to me on two occasions with systems that were getting regular use.
Since the '92 has only a single belt, the car is not driveable. IF the clutch isn't totally shot, you might be able to disconnect the clutch wire (to prevent clutch engagement) and still drive the car. However, I'll bet the clutch bearings are toasted, and you risk siezing the clutch.
You will need a fresh compressor and clutch - if you intend on keeping the car for a while, conversion to R134a isn't a bad idea. Definately replace the serpentine belt while you're at it - it probably is due for replacement, and has just gone through quite a bit of trauma.
