ABS and "!" Light

My '97 Aero just got new pads on all four wheels about three hundred kilometers ago and now I'm getting an intermitent ABS warning light occasionally joined by the "!" light and a feeling like there is sand in the pads and the ABS pumping for no reason when applying the brakes at low speed. I didn't know what the "!" light is (my manual is in German) so I called the guy who did the brake job and he said that it sounded like the ABS pump was going south and that it had nothing to do with the new pads. Is it likely to have a pump failure at 150,000 kilometers or is there something else that I should look for, i.e. air in the lines, bad connections etc? and if so where will I find the ABS pump on my car? Thanks for the help!
