Three years ago I was faced with a similar situation. The car has the timing chain slipped on the crankshaft, which resulted in the same thing. A head job cost $300 (from the machine shop only, labor and time to install it is mine). Replacing the engine cost one grand (again cost of engine only). I chose the later route. Not mentioned is I have a engine stand and lift in my garage which made the job easier.
57k miles later, I think I made the right choice. I sold the engine block, DI cassette and miscellaneous parts on the old engine for close to $700. Still have the head in my garage.
I thought an engine swap is much, much easier, partly because I was still a little gun shy from my debacle years ago botching up a head job on a Nissan.
