Fan and blower motor are probably used interchageably by your mechanic. The fan blades are clearly visible in the image below from http://www.quasimotors.com
Partially obscured is the motor, on whose shaft the fan is mounted. Most replacements only require changing the motor as the fan blades are rarely damaged unless some obstruction enters the area.
Be aware that the blower motor controller can also be a problem. It regulates the voltage to the motor, determining its speed. That was probably what your mechanic was testing. The best way to test your motor is to jumper it's connection directly to your battery. If it runs high speed, you're problem is probably in the controller or the vent flaps.
I pulled the motor out of my '91 and it wasn't all that bad a DIY. I expected worse based on the archives. Based on hassle factor, the price you were quoted doesn't sound too far out of line. You could do it yourself for the price of a motor: ~$60 from a site sponsor, ~$160 with the fan blades already attached. Budget 3-4 hours if you've never done it and make sure to follow Quasi's excellent instructions.
Good luck.
