Possible to remove upper chain tensiner for inspection?

Wife's '96 2.3 CS LPT is making chain slack noise at idle. Can I or should I remove tensioner from below upper dogbone mount to inspect if extended all of the way? Can this even be done? I want to make sure it is extending all of the way to push on chain guide mechanism.
I could also pull the valve cover gasket off for inspection. This car also has balance chain unlike my '89 2.o cd. Hers is definitely much louder than mine with 247,345 original chain miles!
Any advice would be appreciated. I bought this car on merits of my '89 and have experienced more D.I.Y. woes than mine - such as trying to replace the main serp. belt which is a piece of cake on mine but nightmare on hers.
If anyone has good advice, please post. Thanks
