I have a manual tranny '93 9k CSE Turbo with a 147,000 miles on it. Last weekend while dring on the highway, I noticed a slight whining sound. It was fairly soft, so I wasn't very worried. As I got into some stop and go traffic, it became progressively louder. When I was coming to a stop I found that it makes a grinding noise just before I come to a complete stop. The whine is independent of engine speed, dependent on road speed. Doesn't change level or pitch in turns. Makes the noise in all gears, clutch engaged/ disengaged or while in nuetral. The car still shifts fine, all gears are available.
At first, I figured it to be a wheel bearing. However it seemed to be coming from under the hood and not from either wheel. When I jack the car up and turn the wheels with the transmission in nuetral, I can hear a click sound from the transmission are.
Any ideas? I am away from home and don't have the help of my trusted mechanic. The place I took it to just said that I need a new transmission. They said must be a bearing in the transmission. I need more specifics than that. I talked to John @ erikson industries and he didn't seem to have any insight. Just to pull it and they could rebuild it. I don't have the luxury of another car, so I can't be out of comission long.
I've serched through posts and can't seem to find much to go on. Does anyone have any information that may be helpful. I am planning to sell the car soon, so it needs to be fixed... would prefer to have it fixed the right way too.
