John, if you were able to change the serpentine belt yourself, you will have NO PROBLEM changing the idler and tensioner pulleys - to change the belt you had to remove the tensioner pulley anyway, right?

Before I spent $800 at a dealer, I would try a little DIY:

1. Check to see if the tensioner is operating properly and smoothly - you don't need to take out the fender liner for this check. Use a 19mm socket on a breaker bar (16 inches or so?), push the tensioner pulley bolt backwards (counterclockwise), which will compress the tensioner and release tension on the belt. Note that this bolt is reverse threaded, so this will not loosen it. There should be a fairly large amount of resistance - if it just flops down, it's not enough. If the tensioner operates smoothly and does not appear to be leaking, you probably don't need a new one - if it is bad, get one from a sponsor for about $100.

2. In any case, get the idler and tensioner pulleys from one of the site sponsors, should cost about $55 for both. You may also want to get a new belt for about $32, as long as you are at it - your call, depending on belt condition and how often you plan to change it.

3. Remove the front part of the fender liner only - don't need to take out the back part. This is the most time-consuming part of the procedure.

4. See various archives on changing the belt and pulleys, or quasimotors.com has a writeup on it. You will need to make a tool to hold the tensioner: I used a 7-inch long piece of 1-inch angle iron (I have a sculptor friend or maybe obtain from a hardware store?), drilled two holes 4.5 inches apart, inserted two 1/4 or 5/16 by 1-inch bolts with nuts/washers to hold them in place. Change the belt and pulleys.

5. While you have the fender liner out, check the "harmonic balancer" pulley, the main pulley that attaches to the crankshaft. If it's rubbing against the engine, it needs to be replaced NOW. If not, mark it with some paint lines, start the car a few times and check to see that it hasn't moved. If it moves it needs replacement, you may want to have done professionally - some people have DIYed it, but not if you are short on time. Also get the various seals behind it replaced while you are at it.

I just did the belts and pulleys on my '94 for the first time, took a couple of hours. Next time, I could do it in less than an hour.
