There isn't much point in a 3" system if the downpipe is smaller. In fact, the DP is the most important element if you're trying to reduce EGT's (exh. gas temps). If this is your main goal--to mitigate the effects of increased boost, for example--you can reduce it starting at the rear cat outlet if you wish. If reducing back pressure is important, probably not a factor except in extreme performance upgrades, you'll want to go 3" all the way back.
I installed a 3" system and kept it that size to the tip, which I kept at the stock 2¼" so I could reuse my Aero exhaust tip cover. I have basically the same system as Zeke except for the tip reduction and the SS muffer. The middle muffler (resonator) has been eliminated and I have a very pleasant tone to the exhaust that makes the Aero sound like a performance car without obnoxious side effects, like droning on the highway. In fact, you can hardly hear the exhaust when the car is closed at highway speeds or even slower. However, if you don't like the boy-racer sound, with the windows down and accelerating from a start, you can hear it--but I'll wager you'll like what you hear.
