Floor getting hot after long trips!

After the last couple of longer distance trips in my '95 Aero, I noticed that the trunk floor was hotter than the rest of the car. Yesterday, I was on the highway for 4 hours with the rear seats folded down. When got home, unloaded the car, and went to fold them back up I touched the floor under the seats and noticed it was pretty hot too. Hottest point was a gold-colored rectangular metal plate in the center held on with two large torx screws. Was driving in the evening (in the rain) so it couldn't just be from the sun; the car is making this heat somehow.
No unusual secondary indications, although the exhaust has been louder than normal. Could an exhaust leak be the culprit? I remember my mechanic telling me a year or so ago that the middle muffler would start leaking eventually as the top rusts out.
