First, did you use Saab or aftermarket rubber for the upper mount you replaced? Reason is that Saab (or equivalent, like ScanTech) is made of a more durable/stiffer rubber than some others out there (such as "No Name" from eEuroparts--nothing against Todd and his company, it's just that the aftermarket upper mounts he stocks are made of a very soft/mushy rubber).
Second, if your bottom mounts were completely shot, then the probability that your upper mounts would be ripped apart is pretty high. Think about all of the weight those two uppers have to hold on their own (without any help from the bottoms now), as well as the amount of engine-movement from torque and vibrations the uppers have to handle on their own because of broken bottoms.
When you replaced your upper, did you do the vertical (engine) one AND the horizontal (rear dogbone) one? If not, then that also plays into this calculation that the new upper was doing all the work on its own, whichever one that was that you had replaced solo.
Word to the wise: when the uppers are shot, consider the bottoms to be the same or just about there...
