The question I wanted to always get an answer to!! Tho' there's at least 2 parts to it and I got a definite answer to part 1 from my local dealer technician. The flywheel somhow 'rocks' around TDC (did in my case) and the cams aren't 'dead' on are they?? Mine weren't .. and u wonder about slack, don't u?? My chain tensioner wasn't above 11mm - and within the tolerances of where three people thought flywheel TDC and ca marks were aligned (without the tensioner in) I could get the slack side (front of car) in two different positions(!!!!!). NO real answer on this part - so here's my reasoning (btw the car goes very quietly, passed Swedish emissions and safety). There's a tension side to my 2.3 16i with a tensioner, and a 'slack' side with only guides, not tensioner. With two alternate cog teeth placement possibilities I chose the slack variation on the slack side, under tension the chain would otherwise take a straight line and become a chainsaw for the guides and timing cover and head. Turned the engine by hand, for oil circ. then withe no spark, for gas and oil, then with heart in mouth stuck on the DI and fired it first go, and promptly drove it to test. We'll see. No definitive answer, but one anyway. Hope it goes well.
