It's mounted vertically in the "cubby" area just below the antenna on the driver's side.
The head of the cable can be pulled through the opening in the carpet where the metal hold-down loop comes out.
I don't know if there are pre-drilled holes in the bottom of the hatch area to install the changer brackets (mine was already installed when I bought my current '98), but when I installed one in my '97 9000, I found that the carpet was stiff/tough enough to support the brackets and keep the changer stationary without having to screw all the way into the body/bottom of the car.
