I've heard that the oil ring can get stuck on the piston in a position that allows oil to slip through the gap in the rings. Car Talk's "Click and Clack" have suggested trying an oil additive, I think they said anything that has "miracle" in the name. Actually I think they have some specific recommendations for a miracle agent which can be found on their web site at cars.com.
The idea is to free up the rings so they can resume floating on the piston and provide a good oil seal. Seems like an inexpensive test.
I spoke with some GM engineers who tore apart other brands of autos many years ago. They said they bought a Saab (99 or 900) that had 750,000mi on it and had never had the head off. 300k sounds like a good time to rebuild, but these engines are strong, and perhaps your's just needs a bit of cleaning.
