Gear whine in 3rd gear

Within the last week I've noticed a gear whine in 3rd gear under constant speed in my 1994 Aero's 5sp transmission. In searching the board I see a suggestion to check the fluid level which I will do tonight but I thought I remember reading a couple of people reporting transmission issues where something failed internally. The transmission has 111k miles on it.
Any other suggestions besides check the fluid level? Thanks.
