First I want to thank everyone here for their ideas and help. This is a great place to chat and exchange knowledge.I have a saab 92 9000 turbo with the 2.3 engine. The timing chain broke and I had to decide between junking or fixing the car and keep it since it only has 100k on it.my goal is if I decide to fix I will try to keep the cost really low like they say" only fix what will stop the show".Well I took the head and the timing cover off and then I was shocked.I found 8 valves bent(pistons are ok),head gasket was really bad, balance chain was ready to break because of worn sprockets.I called Eeuroparts and got the following, head gasket($16),timing chain($16),2 guides for $50, and I got a used cylinder head from the junkyard for $27(yes you better believe it). After I read about some people running witout the balance chain I decided to just take the balance chain out but leave everything esle still in the engine.I put the used head back, put the new guides with the chain(by the way the timing chain sprockets were still good). After one day of work I started the car and it sounded really bad with a lot of smoke and hesitation.Did a compression test and it was good about 160-170.I then took the valve cover off rechecked the timing and it was correct. When I was trying to put the plugs back I noticed that 2 of them were wet and I knew water was going to cylinder 2&3.I took the head off again but I did not see where water can get to the cylinder and oil.WOW what the hell to do now.after alot of research I found out that water was going to the cylinder head through the intake manifold(my fault never changed the intake gasket).I got the gasket put everything back together for the second time, started the car and it sounded great. So I spent about $90 to get my car back on the road after timing and head gasket failure.
MY ADVISE TO YOU my friends took the balance chain out.Its not worth it to loose your car because of it.
seconde if your timing chain breaks fix your car and dont pay someone else about $3k to do the job for you it only takes about one day for the job .its easy as long as you do your homework before taking any bolts out.I really learned from quasi`s web page since he had a good picture of the blc/timing chain.
Again I really want to thank everybody in the bulletin board for their help to get this project done.
