It seems that from time to time, discussions range from the best performance tire to run in summer, to pressure settings, to the age old stud vs studless snow tire settings.....
I have always read these with interest. I drive a 93 9000 CDE with 5 spd and 197,000 miles (that's what 35,000 a year does for a car!). I live in a mountainous area of Colorado USA that has snow packed roads for 3-6 months of the winter. I went from the near-fatal mistake of studded snows, through several of the "performance" studless snows that seemed to wear out midway through my season----by midwinter, I was driving on the all season compound with less traction. A few years ago, I switched to Nokian Haakapelitta Q's and have not thought twice since.
I have gotten 2 seasons of performance winter driving out of them, the first time EVER I have put a set of snow tires back on a car for a second year (ok, so 10-15,000 miles is a lot for a set of snows, but still). As I went to replace my all season's this spring, the NOKIAN WR's with their SEVERE SERVICE rating caught my eye, rated both for their performance and durability as well as winter handling. I just finished my first day of winter driving (3+" in the high country and am writing in cuz I am DAMNED impressed with the handling of snow and slush today. They held in the turns. They held on the hills. Could not GET the TCS to engage. Go figure. Can't say anything about em for ice yet, but I have a pretty good sense they ought to fare well.
My one hesitation was their price. Given that I am planning to run these through the winter and spring I will be saving on the changeover 2 times (plus sitting in a garage waiting area)----making up for their higher than average price. I have driven these in all conditions and while I WILL SAY they are a little less than snappy at high speeds, if you think you can keep it under 85, I don't think you will find much to not like.....besides, if you are such a performance enthusiast, you OUGHT To have a second set of tires. Me? I'm an everyday driving kind of guy.
I really was on the fence with these----I have ALWAYS run 2 sets of tires just for safety and performance in inclement weather. This morning made me a changed man. I encourage anyone interested in the safety and performace I have described to take the well spent time to find this tire and give it a look.
