Just to finish off the thread - it turned out to be the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor - aka the Crank Angle Sensor).
Here were the symptoms:
Intermittent no starts - it would crank and crank, then it would start and run fine.
Then it would not start at all. I pulled the DI cassette, inserted and grounded the plugs, then cranked - nothing. Also, the fuel pump was not being engaged at all. So I jumpered the fuel pump at the fuse panel using the hazards - nice humming sound. I even tried cranking while jumpering the fuel pump (in case it was a relay issue).
SO.. this WAS a clear case of a CPS failure. Running like a top again.
Many thanks to all on the board.
